Notes on Women's Roles: Yesterday and Today

Women in Upper Canada

  • Did not own property
  • Couldn’t vote
  • Did all work in house
  • No outside jobs
  • Goal was for a woman to marry women were defined by their husbands
  • Love was not as necessary for marriage
  • Childbirth was hazardous
  • Expected to have a lot of children
  • Originally defined by social class however because people of all classes worked side by side, social classes began to break down

 Women Today

  • Woman can own as much as they can afford
  • Woman have the vote
  • Expectations that men will help with housework
  • Many women have outside jobs
  • Love is necessarily tied to marriage
  • Childbirth somewhat hazardous
  • Women defined by looks, their own personal money, work, education
  • Woman can control the size of family
  • We still have social class but to a lesser extent because of the breakdown of social class in Upper Canada.
